The Golden Age of Automobiles Is Now
An argument could be made for any number of golden ages when it comes to automobiles, which have embodied innovation, ingenuity, and the confluence of creative and technological pursuits. Some see the genius of Henry Ford as the pinnacle of automotive history, while others might point to the stately, art deco era of automobiles that produced beauties like the 1930 Mercedes-Benz SSK and the 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic as the ultimate marriage of art and mechanics. Still others gravitate toward the space-age cars of the ’50s and ’60s, with their futuristic vision, dramatic fins, bullet-like tail lights, and space capsule interiors.
What cannot be denied is our long love affair with automobiles, and it’s far from over. In fact, the fire of our automotive romance is blazing bright once again with a number of new vehicles vying to take their place in history and supplant previous assumptions about what marks the golden age of automobiles. A strong argument could be made that we’re currently experiencing a modern “golden era”, in which consumers have access to a virtual kaleidoscope of automotive variety.
Modern cars are a marvel of comfort, safety, speed, and economy, paired with the convenience of technology and the appeal of artistic design. Getting from point A to point B in comfort, style and safety has never been more available than it is today, and for the discerning driver, choices for automotive travel abound.
Even better is the fact that innovation is accelerating at a break-neck pace. There are so many advances in the automotive world taking place, and so many incredible cars to choose from, that the biggest problem for many consumers is figuring out how to select the perfect vehicle.
Today we are discussing not only a few shining examples of all that the modern automotive industry has to offer, but also how you can take advantage of the many amazing cars on the market you’d like to sample. How is it possible? Let’s start by examining a few of the best all-new vehicles for your consideration before moving on to how you can give them a whirl.
There are two things you need to know about the reimagined Lexus lineup. First, and most noticeable, is the fact that this luxury car brand is on a mission to banish the boring silhouettes they’ve been known for. Along those lines, they’ve introduced the Lexus LC500, a low-slung lightning bolt of sleek, sexy, automotive excellence; a mechanical predator in search of roadway to devour. If your eyes don’t bug out in admiration and desire when you see this car, you might want to check your wrist for a pulse.
Everything from the long, low hood, to the up-tilted windows, to the slashes of side-scoop, to the softly rounded rear speak of speed and longing (and the 5.0-liter V-8 certainly doesn’t detract from the equation). If the muse, Erato, was molded in metal, one might imagine this to be her ideal form, pulled by a chariot 471 horses strong.
The second thing you need to know is that no amount of luxury was compromised in the making of this sporty, spirited vehicle. The outside may read performance junkie, but the inside is entirely devoted to comfort and class, as devoted Lexus drivers have come to expect.
The cabin is surprisingly open for such a tightly-wound sportster, with an unobstructed view of the roadway, courtesy of the steeply slanted hood. Seating is technically two-plus-two, but for adult passengers, the front two provide the roomy and appealing choice.
The interior is punctuated by sophistication, featuring materials like sturdy, stitched-leather, buttery suede, and metallic accents, not to mention styling that mirrors the miles flying by outside. Paired with the latest technologies, including a console infotainment system, drivers will have to be wary of getting too comfortable in this car, especially since the smooth suspension, nimble handling, and quiet interior could make you feel like you’re floating along in an ergonomic nap pod.
The long and short of it is, that this is definitely not your granny’s Lexus. The company has preserved the luxury longtime patrons prefer, but paired it with eye-popping design and performance that will turn much younger heads.
Maserati Levante S
All you have to do is look at Maserati’s logo to know the devil is in the details, and the company does not skimp when it comes to introducing their first SUV market. It’s easy to overlook this multi-tasking crossover as the potential staple of the family car collection, but with a well-designed interior, sportscar-like performance and all the technological bells and whistles, the Maserati Levante S is nothing so much as a chameleon prepared to become exactly what every driver is looking for.
The Porsche Cayenne has long been lauded as the pinnacle of the luxury-performance SUV market, and naturally, that makes it the one to beat. Maserati has a fighting chance with their robust addition to this multi-purpose sector.
Let’s just start with a look under the hood, where Ferrari fans might be shocked to see a familiar 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, marching to the tune of 424 fine Italian stallions. Rev the engine and you can’t help but fall in love with the aggressive, almost feral growl of this high-powered mechanical masterpiece. Not convinced? Perhaps a quick blast from 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds will get your engine running, so to speak.
The exterior styling also fires a shot across the bow of competitors like Porsche. Whereas the current Cayenne looks a bit hollow-cheeked and anemic with its hawkish nose and concave door panels, the full-figured Levante S has the squat, athletic demeanor of an Olympic track and field contender, ready to launch a discus into outer space.
The interior is nothing to sniff at, either. Cabin styling starts with soft leather that features contrast stitching, embellished by carbon fiber accents. The infotainment system is a carry-over from other vehicles, but no less robust for it, with touch-screen functionality, mobile device integration, and the opportunity to select the technological features that best suit your needs. One interesting addition that is popping up in a variety of other high-end car brands, as well, is the analog clock, which adds a touch of nostalgia and class to an otherwise tech-heavy console.
The front seats are comfortable and supportive – the back seats less so, probably because crossovers are intended for shuttling kids to sporting practices or planning family camping trips. In this regard, the roomy rear cargo area is a godsend. Also attractive are comfort features like the advanced active-air suspension and shock absorbing Skyhook system. Don’t think this car is meant purely for hauling gear, though. City drivers will also love handy features like the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS).
In a word, the Levante S is superb. There is no shortage of entries in the crossover market, but if you’re looking for a sporty, dependable, luxury vehicle, Maserati delivers the total package.
Alfa Romeo Guilia Quadrifoglio
The “four-leaf clover” (Quadrifoglio) of the Alfa Romeo lineup could be considered a lucky star, especially since the label denotes a long history of winning race cars, but the truth is, this car is a testament to the thousands of man-hours that go into designing, building, and perfecting a luxury performance vehicle.
With a power-to-weight ratio that’s best in its class, almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution, and a targeted combination of high-strength steel (body), aluminum (doors, fenders), and carbon fiber (hood, roof, driveshaft), this aerodynamic slice of vehicular heaven deftly handles the incredible 505 horses rocketing out of the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6.
The Guilia Quadrifoglio ostensibly serves two major purposes. According to Alfa Romeo, it was “inspired by Ferrari technology and technical skills”, to give you an idea of just who the company views as real competition. It is also intended to launch a victorious re-entry into the U.S. marketplace after years of conspicuous absence.
At first glance, the Guilia Quadrifoglio bears the appearance of many other luxury performance sedans, which is to say, it looks stately with a sporty edge. Hey, it is a 4-door sedan, not a stealth bomber. Of course, this is more than made up for with invigorating performance, including bracing acceleration, responsive handling, and three different choices of chassis mode (Dynamic, Natural, and Advanced, or DNA), as well as a racing mode.
The inside of the car is even more interesting, with design features intended to grab your attention. You can’t help but notice the asymmetrical instrument panel, naturally weighted more heavily on the driver’s side, as if the passenger is merely an afterthought.
Still, occupants need not fear – the accommodations are comfortable front and back, which is what you should reasonably expect when you purchase a high-end performance sedan. The ultra-premium leather with accent stitching and carbon fiber inserts hearken to the time-honored tradition associated with Italian, bespoke tailoring, but aluminum accents are slightly less impressive in a vehicle of this stature. Pop some tunes on the Harmon Kardon surround sound system, however, and you’ll forget about such tiny trifles.
This Alfa Romeo doesn’t skimp on looks, but where it truly shines is performance. Whether you drive a lot for work, you’re looking for a suitable family car, or letting loose on the open road is more your speed, this is one luxury performance sedan you’re going to have a lot of fun driving.
Getting Your Cars, Your Way
Now that you have a taste what’s new in the sport, SUV, and sedan markets, you might have a tough time choosing the vehicle of your dreams. They’re all amazing in their own way, after all. Unfortunately, the major improvements in cars have yet to coincide with an improvement in the car market, insomuch as the entrenched model of leasing or buying are pretty much your only two options.
What if there was another way? The automotive industry is in a constant state of advancement, so why not the process of accessing the many vehicles that spark consumer interest? It would hardly be the first industry to explore new avenues of consumerism.
Just look at Airbnb, which allows travelers to briefly sample life in another locale from the perspective of a local resident. Or how about websites like Bag Borrow or Steal that urge members to take designer handbags for a spin before returning them to try out a new model.
Why can’t consumers try out one amazing car for a few months before handing it back over in order to sample something else? Life is short and you want to experience a wide variety of modern vehicles, but the restrictions of leasing or buying hold you back.
